Quais os benefícios de uma alimentação rica em fitoestrogénios?

Resumo

O número cada vez maior de pessoas que recorre a uma alimentação mais cuidada, com especial incidência para o consumo
de substitutos da carne, como a soja e seus derivados, tornou
necessário aprofundar os conhecimentos actuais sobre os efeitos
dos fitoestrogénios, quer a nível farmacológico, quer toxicológico
principalmente devido ao facto da soja ser a principal fonte de fitoestrogénios da dieta humana.
Apesar dos primeiros estudos sobre fitoestrogénios datarem
de meados de 1940 e de estar devidamente documentado que
a população feminina oriental não está tão afectada pela sintomatologia associada à menopausa, facto que tem sido atribuído à
alimentação rica em soja, faltam estudos claramente conclusivos
acerca dos potenciais benefícios que os fitoestrogénios aparentam ter. Não obstante os inúmeros avanços já concretizados nesta
área muito ainda falta descobrir.
A presente revisão pretende condensar o que até à data se sabe
de mais importante sobre fitoestrogénios e avaliar a sua relevância
para a nutrição humana principalmente em populações alvo.
