Tratamento cirúrgico da epilepsia

Resumo

A terapêutica dos doentes com epilepsia con­tinua a ser essencialmente baseada na utiliza­ção dos fármacos antiepilépticos. No entanto, a terapêutica cirúrgica deve constituir uma alter­nativa nos doentes refractários à terapêutica e naqueles que apresentam efeitos secundários indesejáveis. O desenvolvimento dos métodos com­ plementares de diagnóstico e das técnicas cirúr­gicas permitiu uma melhoria apreciável da efi­ cácia e da segurança deste tipo de procedimen­tos, sobretudo no que diz respeito a algumas situações específicas, nomeadamente a esclerose mesial temporal e alguns quadros do foro pe­diátrico. A cirurgia da epilepsia constitui, as­sim, actualmente, uma opção que deverá ser pon­derada na avaliação e terapêutica dos doentes com epilepsia.
