The Journal adopts the ICMJE definition of editorial freedom described by the World Association of Medical Editors, which states that the editor-in-chief assumes complete authority over the editorial content of the journal. The SPMI, as owner of the Journal of the Portuguese Society of Internal Medicine, does not interfere in the process of evaluating, selecting, programming or editing any manuscript, and the Editor-in-Chief has complete editorial independence.
The Journal is governed by the biomedical publishing standards drawn up by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), available at http://www.ICMJE.org and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
The Journal's editorial policy incorporates into the review and publication process the Editorial Policy Statements issued by the Council of Science Editors, available at http://www.councilscienceeditors.org/resource-library/editorial policies/white-paper-on-publication-ethics/, which covers the responsibilities and rights of the editors of journals with scientific arbitration.
These standards are in line with the Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals (ICMJE Recommendations), available at: http://www.icmje.org/recommendations/.
