New article published as Ahead of Print - PICTURE-IM: Portuguese Initiative for Characterizing Hospitalization: A Multicentre Retrospective Report of Internal Medicine – PART 1
Internal Medicine plays a central role in the care of the most complex patients within the Portuguese healthcare system.
A multicentre study, involving 25 Internal Medicine Departments and 7,282 hospital admissions, provides a comprehensive characterisation of this population, with a mean age of 77 years and a high prevalence of multimorbidity and cardiovascular risk factors.
The results highlight the diversity and complexity of the care provided by Internal Medicine Departments and reinforce the importance of the specialty in addressing the challenges posed by an ageing Portuguese population with a high burden of multimorbidity.
