Long-time intake of senna: weight loss, cyclic edema, dyspepsia and hepatoneuromyopathy
Keywords:
senna, hepatopathy, neuropathy, myopahty, cyclic edema, weight loss, dyspepsiaAbstract
The authors presents a case, of a 31 year-old female, under
long-time intake of senna, complaining of intense weight loss,
cyclic edema and dyspepsia, as well as asymptomatic increased
hepatic and muscular lesion markers, dislypidemia, changes in
electromyography and a mitochondrial myopathy in the muscular
biopsy, with some of these changes becoming normal several
weeks after senna ingestion interruption.
This clinical case acquires especial significance, given that
senna is widely used for its pharmacological proprieties, forgetting
its potential toxic effects.
