Abstract

Gastrointestinal (GI) function is controlled by the intrinsic nervous
system (the enteric plexuses - the little digestive brain) and by
the extrinsic nervous system (sympathetic and parasympathetic).
Gastrointestinal tract symptoms in patients with Diabetes mellitus
(DM) can affect all the digestive tract. Diagnosing autonomic nervous system (SNA) affectation, particulary in what concerns to the
GI function, in patients with diabetes is a very hard task, because
it is usually asymptomatic or reveals no specific symptoms.
Diabetic Neuropathy prevalency is very variable depending on
the series. Nevertheless the treatment itself can be complex and clinically fallible.
The authors present a short revision of the theme, emphasizing
the importance of the Diabetic Gastroparesis (GPD) study, so that
it can help both the doctor and the patient in the choice of the
most appropriate insulin scheme as well as the main point of the
treatment is the rigorous glycemic control associated with a good
improvement in a required diet.
