Merkel cell carcinoma – case report
Keywords:
neuroendocrine carcinoma, skin tumour, Merkel cells, venous thromboembolismAbstract
The authors present the case of a 68 year-old woman, admitted
to an Internal Medicine ward, with the diagnosis of pulmonary
embolism. During the stay in that ward, the histopathological
analysis of an inguinal lymph node cluster biopsed previously to
her admittance, suggested metastases of Merkel Cell Carcinoma.
After thorough examination of the skin the primary tumour was
found, being of unusual localization and characteristics.
The rare incidence of such neoplasia and its uncommon clinical
presentation justifies reporting this case.
