Abstract

The authors describe a case of cerebral and spinal cord Toxoplasmosis as the first manifestation of AIDS, in a patient who’s
HIV infection was unknown.
In this context, opportunistic infections usually appear, when the
number of TCD4 lymphocytes are under 200 cells/μL.
Toxoplasmosis is the most frequent cause of focal cerebral injuries in patients infected with HIV; however, Spinal cord injury due
to Toxoplasma gondii is very unusual. We have only found a total
of 16 published cases in the medical literature since 1988.
Given the fact of the rarity of spinal cord injury by Toxoplasmosis,
some theoretical considerations are made, focused on the clinical
management of the Myelopathy in HIV patients.
