The authors present a retrospective review of a diabetic gastroparesis (DGP) study in diabetic patients followed in a District
Hospital diabetic unit.
Material and Methods: In a group of 521 diabetic patients,
thirteen were selected for a DGP study using the Gastric Emptying Scintigram (GES) test.
Results: Study request was based on signs and symptoms, and
above all unstable blood glucose profile. The results of the GES
test revealed a delay in eleven of the thirteen patients.
Discussion: A weak relationship between clinical signs and
objective measures of delayed gastric emptying (quantified by
the Gastric Emptying test) was found. The A.A. would like to call
attention to the use of the GES as an important warning for the
presence of Autonomic Neuropathy (AN). It is extremely difficult
to know the true prevalence of AN in the diabetic population. This
study highlights the importance of AN investigation.
