Abstract

Isolated ocular Kaposi’s Sarcoma appears in
0.3 to 5% of AIDS patients. However, AIDS patients with disseminated Kaposi’s Sarcoma have
a much higher incidence of ocular presentations (15-20%).
A clinical case-report of epidemic Kaposi’s Sarcoma with an ocular presentation is reported. Lipossomal daunorubicin and antiretroviral treatment were the first therapeutic options,
however as disease progressed under this regimen, alternative chemotherapy was started
in association with cidofovir.
This paper reviews ocular Kaposi’s Sarcoma
and discusses the role of cidofovir in the treatment of these tumours associated with human
herpes type 8 virus.
