Hydroflouric Acid Poisoning – a clinical case report with an unfavourable outcome
Keywords:
hydroflouric acid, hypocalcaemia, fluoride ionAbstract
The A.A. describe a clinical case of attempted suicide by ingestion of hydroflouric acid. The
patient presented with hypocalcaemia and cardiac electrical instability which resulted in death from recurrent ventricular fibrillation. Poisoning with this product is not common and is associated with a high mortality. It has been
rarely described and only 11 documented cases have been published in the last 40 years.
The different pathophysiologic mechanisms of hydroflouric acid poisoning are discussed,
namely the role of fluoride ion in calcium and magnesium depletion and the toxic effects that
occur on a cellular level.
