Abstract

The occasion for this article is provided by the X-rays centennial. The author talks about the discovery of the X-rays and refers the contribu­tion of Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen to Medicine.

The author makes a description of the disco­ very stressing the research and moral qualities of Roentgen.

The worldwide excitement provoked by the dis­covery is mentioned and a reference is made to the earlier X-rays applications done in Portugal by H. Teixeira Bastos, lecturer at the University of Coimbra.

The emergence of the various X-ray diagnostic techniques are briefly reported with special men­tion to the contribution of the portuguese scien­tists to angiography.

The last part of this paper deals with the contribution of X- rays to interventional radiology and radiotherapy.
