The occasion for this article is provided by the X-rays centennial. The author talks about the discovery of the X-rays and refers the contribution of Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen to Medicine.
The author makes a description of the disco very stressing the research and moral qualities of Roentgen.
The worldwide excitement provoked by the discovery is mentioned and a reference is made to the earlier X-rays applications done in Portugal by H. Teixeira Bastos, lecturer at the University of Coimbra.
The emergence of the various X-ray diagnostic techniques are briefly reported with special mention to the contribution of the portuguese scientists to angiography.
The last part of this paper deals with the contribution of X- rays to interventional radiology and radiotherapy.
