Multiple myeloma is a common disease in older persons, accounting for 10% of haematologic cancers. lts causes are unknown and its extent, clini cai course, complications and sensivity to drugs have a wide range of variation. Conventional chemotherapy is palliative: less than 5% live 10 ye ars and, among these, almost all have suffered multiple relapses. This review will focus there sults of high dose chemotherapy on the treatment of multiple myeloma, with bone marrow transplantation or peripheral blood stem cells support.
