Abstract

Organophosphate pesticide poisoning is a major cause of
morbidity and mortality all over the world. Its severity is dose
dependent and related to the mode of exposure and type of
organophosphate compound. It can, as a consequence, require
treatment in an intensive care environment. The toxic effects of
organophosphate poisoning may present three distinct phases:
intermediate syndrome (IS), acute cholinergic crisis (ACC) and
organophosphate-induced delayed neuropathy (OPIDN). This
article reports the case of a young patient, who suffered of
severe poisoning caused by the voluntary ingestion of chlorpyrifos
(ciclone® 48 EC), in which rare neurological complications
occurred in succession.
