Radioterapia Paliativa para Cuidados Oncológicos em Fim de Vida

Resumo

A radioterapia com intuito paliativo pode aliviar uma multiplicidade de sintomas relacionados com cancro avançado. O alívio dos sintomas pode ser medido nas primeiras 24-48 horas ou em semanas ou meses após a conclusão da radioterapia. A taxa óptima de utilização de radioterapia no final de vida é desconhecida, devendo o seu uso ser criterioso. Contudo, deverá ser incluída, dada a sua eficácia, nos doentes cuja sobrevida o permita e minorada naqueles com curta expectativa de vida. Os estudos demonstram que os oncologistas têm tendência a sobreprognosticar a sobrevida dos seus doentes solicitando tratamentos que não os vão beneficiar. Os índices prognósticos podem ser úteis em estimar o período de sobrevida e ajudar a orientar decisões terapêuticas relativamente a radioterapia paliativa em doentes com tempo de sobrevida po- tencialmente curto. Esta revisão pretende destacar os bene- fícios e indicações da radioterapia paliativa para cuidados oncológicos em fim de vida.
