O abcesso pulmonar é definido como um processo infeccioso
causado por germes piogénicos, localizado e circunscrito ao
parênquima pulmonar, com necrose de tecido, supuração e
cavitação. Os abcessos pulmonares surgem em doentes com
predisposição para a aspiração geralmente por alteração do
estado de consciência (alcoolismo, epilepsia, acidente vascular
cerebral, entre outros). Na era pré-antibiótico, a mortalidade
dos doentes com abcesso pulmonar era de 33%. Hoje, com o
tratamento médico adequado conseguem tratar-se cerca de 90%
destes doentes. No entanto o aparecimento de estirpes resistentes
aos antibióticos outrora considerados gold standard começa a
ser uma preocupação no tratamento destes doentes. Abordamos
a fisiopatologia, a microbiologia e a metodologia diagnóstica do
abcesso pulmonar, assim como a terapêutica.
