Abstract

Q fever is a worldwide zoonosis caused by Coxiella burnetii. The
disease has a broad spectrum of clinical behaviour, ranging from
a limited febrile illness to life threatening forms such as endocarditis, with severe multi-organ involvement. In Portugal, Q fever
is a notifiable disease but the official data may not accurately
reflect its true incidence. This article revises the most important
aetiopathology, epidemiology and clinical aspects of the disease,
mentioning some of the national series in a way to sensitive
physicians about Q fever.
