Diabetes and pregnancy – 5 years outpatient experience
Keywords:
macrosomia, caesarean, risk factors, gestational diabetes mellitusAbstract
An oversupply of glucose to the foetus causes
foetal hyperinsulinism in pregnancies complicated by diabetes mellitus and increases the risk of perinatal morbility.
In the study we present the management protocol of diabetic pregnancy followed in the outpatient clinic.
The authors present a retrospective study, where the outcomes of 122 pregnancies, 114
with gestational diabetes mellitus and 8 with previous diabetes, were evaluated. The study involved patients followed in the Diabetes and Pregnancy outpatient clinic of S. Gonçalo – Amarante Hospital, between March 1997 and February 2002.
The authors conclude that intensive management of diabetes in pregnancy was significantly associated with better maternal and perinatal outcomes and that there is a need for the
implementation of therapeutic protocols.
