Abstract

The authors present a clinical case of bacterial
endocarditis, in a 70 years old man, with an automatic
internal cardioverter defibrillator. The tricuspid and
mitral valves were simultaneously involved and septic
pulmonary emboli with respiratory compromise
occurred. Enterococcus faecalis was the bacterial
agent identified. Pulmonary tuberculosis was also
diagnosed in this patient. A revision of the literature concerning endocarditis
in patients with intra-cardiac prosthetic devices is
made. The risk factors associated, the role of
prophylactic antibiotics and the therapeutic options
are discussed.
