An unusual type of ovarian tumour: small cell carcinoma
Keywords:
small-cell carcinoma, ovarian tumours, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, ovulation induction medicationAbstract
A case of primary ovarian small-cell carcinoma ocurring in a 42 year old woman is described. The patient had received ovulation induction medication ten previously.
Despite adequate surgery and multiagent adjuvant chemotherapy, metastatic para-aortic lymph nades, were detected 10 months after operation. Second line chemotherapy and radiotherapy failed to halt tumor progression, and the patient died 18 months post surgery . This rare and agressive type of tumour must be differentiated from other ovarian tumours , namely germ-cell tumours and lymphoma, because prognosis and therapeutic management are different. The origin of this tumour is unknown. Optimal post- surgery treatment (multiagent chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or combined therapy), in the adjuvant setting or in recurrent disease, is not yet defined.
