Abstract

The present study was carried out in view of the usual severity of bacterial meningitis in the elderly, mainly to compare the actual results with the other one carried out 7 years ago by the same authors. The study confirms the undoubtful severity of this disease and made possible to demonstrate a mortality rate of 30,3%, against 45% that was found in the first study. As reasons for the buest performance, the authors point out a correct and prompt diagnosis, the use of a monoantibiotic drug regimen, mainly with the betalaclamic drugs, as well as the control of metabolic, water and eletrolitics disorders. The autors also point out that Sfreptococcos Pneumoniae was the most commun agent isolated, as reported in the bibliography. They call the attention to the low percentage of positive results, which may come out whether in the cerebrospinal fluid, or in the blood cultures.
