Abstract

The authors performed a retrospective study of rheumatoid arthritis files from the outpatients clinic of Internal Medicine of Faro Regional Hospital between 1991 and 1994. The parameters that had been analyzed were: sex, age, clinicai manifesta tions, medical treatment and clinicai course.

The female sex was predominant (73,3%) and the average age of the group was 56 years. All the patients presented articular manifestations and in 40% of the cases revealed extra-articular manifestations. The assessment of the therapy performed (gold compounds, methotrexate, d-penicillamine) allowed to conclude that methotrexate was the drug which had a better clinical response and less toxicity.

From the review of literature about RA the au thors point out the need of the earlier use of more aggressive drugs, probably in combinations, which can prevent the eventual loss of joint structure and function and increase the life span of the patients.
