Abstract

Lymphomas of the bone are uncommon and
only occasionally encountered in the spine, where they are usually secondary deposits.
The authors report the case of a fifty-eightyear old woman with low back pain of six weeks
duration, which did not improve with analgesics. Laboratory tests showed a normocytic anaemia and a raised erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Spinal X-Rays showed collapse of the L2
vertebra and increased uptake at this level in
the bone scan. The CT and the MRI demonstrated lytic bone lesions in D12, L1 e L2 vertebrae
and the histological examination of the biopsy
specimen revealed a Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.
The patient was managed with surgery to stabilise the vertebra, chemotherapy with the CHOP
regime and local irradiation.
After therapy, the patient maintained back pain, cervical lymph nodes appeared and the patient died a year after the diagnosis.
