Introduction: Antimicrobial resistance requires priority intervention
at national level. Portugal is one of the European countries with the
highest rate of antimicrobial drugs consumption and prevalence of
infections caused by multidrug-resistant microorganisms, particularly MRSA.
Objective: To identify the susceptibility profile of common bacteria
isolated in the Microbiology Laboratory of Hospital Garcia de Orta
(LM-HGO); publishing this information and encourage the use of
antimicrobials drugs appropriate to the institution´s microbiological flora.
Methods: Observational retrospective study of microorganisms
commonly isolated in the LM-HGO in 2012 and analysis of their
susceptibility profile. Compare to national data. Publish the data as
a pocket guide.
Results: We studied 4760 microorganisms, 40.5% related to community acquired infections and 59.5% to nosocomial infections. The majority (58.7%) was isolated from urine culture. The most frequent
microorganisms isolated were Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia and Staphylococcus aureus. The antimicrobial susceptibility
decreased considerably when matching community and nosocomial strains, in particular those of Escherichia coli and Klebsiella
pneumoniae. When compared at national level, the microorganisms isolated in the LM-HGO generally had a greater percentage of
antimicrobial susceptibility, offset however, by the higher prevalence
of MRSA.
Conclusion: Multidrug resistance to antimicrobials is problematic in
HGO. In addition to infection control measures, it is essential to optimize the use of antimicrobial agents. The knowledge of the susceptibility profile data of the institution´s microbiological flora contributes
to selecting the most appropriate antimicrobial. The elaboration of a
pocket guide with this information is pioneer in HGO and favors its application in clinical practice.
