Abstract

Overweight and obesity continue to rise being highly prevalent
throughout the world, and are related to an unbalance between
energy intake and output. Genetic, endocrine, neuroendocrine,
behavioral and environmental factors play an important role in their
etiopathogenesis. The diagnosis is made based on the body mass
index and waist circumference. The prevention and treatment are
necessary, since an excessive morbidity and mortality can be
linked to obesity and its associated disorders mainly cardiovascular and metabolic. Proper nutrition and increased physical activity
are the main focus of these measures. Adjuvant pharmacological
intervention (orlistat) is recommended for patients with concomitant overweight- or obesity-related diseases and for whom diet
and physical activity have not been successful. Bariatric surgery is
reserved for patients with severe obesity or those with moderate
obesity associated with a serious medical condition, after at least
one year of an inefficient conservative treatment. The purpose of
this review is to assess all these aspects.
