Abstract

Oxygen therapy is indicated in the treatment of several clinical situations. An integrated action of respiratory, cardiovascular and haematologic systems is necessary for its appropriate utilisation by the human body.

Hypoxaemia and consequent cellular hypoxia, especially in patients suffering from chronic respiratory failure, provokes physiopathologic alterations, anda reduced survival overall. Long-term oxygen therapy, during most hours of the day, reduces the complications of such diseases and prolongs the life of patients.

The European Respiratory Society has defined the criteria for long-term oxygen therapy in patients suffering from chronic respiratory failure and for patients with exertional hypoxaemia or during sleep. The author presents the indications for prescription of domiciliary long-term oxygen therapy, the sources and the systems for its administration.
