Abstract

The authors examined the admissions in an Internal Medicine ward in 1984 and 1994, with evidence of some important differences between the casuistry of the two series that were analysed:

  1. a significant rise of the rate of admissions in the mate patients between 21 and 30 years old (2,4% in 1984 and 5,4% in 1994, p< 0,001) owing to the higher number of infectious disease cases, including AIDS' cases that were not found in 1984.
  2. a fali in the rate of admissions between 41 and 50 years (11,6% in 1984 and 7% ind 1994) and between 51 and 60 years ( 21,9% in 1984 and 13% in 1994); this fall was bigger in the mate sex and it is likely to be due to the smaller number of chronic hepatic disease cases in mate patients (9,4% in 1984 and 3,8% in 1994, p< 0,05).
  1. a significant rise of the rate of admissions of patients 81 year sold or more (p< 0,001), because of general aging of the population.
