Systemic manifestations of gastrointestinal diseases
Keywords:
gastrointestinal diseases, extraintestinal manifestations, associated diseasesAbstract
Gastrointestinal diseases sometimes present systemically and
such manifestations can represent a complex diagnostic challenge. Systemic presentations can be a consequence of the direct
gastrointestinal lesion, as in anaemia or malabsorption; due to the
production of immunologic mediators, as happens in autoimmune
diseases; or because of inflammatory mediators and hormones
as occurs in paraneoplastic syndromes.
For these reasons, as well as an absence of systematisation of
this subject, the authors present a review article that pretends,
concisely, to outline the principal systemic manifestations of gastrointestinal diseases.
