Soft tissue sarcomas: Six case reports of leiomyosarcommas

Sarcomas are malignant tumours, which develop from skeletal and extra-skeletal connective tissue. They include a large and diverse type of cellular elements and may involve different anatomic structures. However, the mesoderm is the common embryologícal orígín.
The natural history of sarcomas and theír variable response to therapy, allows us to consíder paediatric and adult sarcomas, as well as soft tissue and osteosarcomas, as individual entíties,
The aim of the present study is to revíew clinicai aspects of soft tíssue sarcomas, with special attention towards leiomyosarcoma (LMS), bearing in mínd their great variability and the wide distribution of smooth muscle cells in the human body. Síx cases of LMS, seen in our Infirmary and Ambulatory Clínic between August 1996 and August 1998, are reviewed.
We conclude that these 6 LMS behaved differently.
lt is difficult to correlate the prognostic factors due to the limited number of patíents involved ín the study. Leiomyosarcomas are a heterogeneous group of tumours with high mortality rates. Their clinicai presentatíon and behaviour depends mostly on tumour localísation.
