Splenic hamartoma with haematologic disorders
Keywords:
splenic hamartoma, haematologic disordersAbstract
Hamartomas of the spleen are rare benign tumour like lesions composed mainly of vascular elements. Most of them, remain small in size and asymptomatic, and are therefore, incidental findings at laparotomy or autopsy. However, occasionally, they present with symptoms among wich, haematologic disorders appear in a very few cases.
The authors report a case of splenic hamartoma in a 44-year-old woman with pancytopenia. Prolonged enhancement on post-contrast CT and MR imaging was a useful finding in differentiation of splenic hamartoma from malignant lesions of the spleen. Hamartomas should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of splenic tumors. Splenectomy, is indicated in cases where malignancy cannot be excluded and in cases of associated haematologic disorders. The haematologic abnormalities, disapeared after removal of the spleen.
By review of the literature, they are less than two tens of well-documented cases of symptomatic splenic hamartomas associated with haematologic disorders.
