Autoimmune cholangitis – a clinical case
Keywords:
Autoimmune cholangitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, autoimmune hepatitis, anti-mytocondrial autoantibodies, anti-smooth muscle autoantibodies, alkaline phosphatase, gammaglutamyltranspheraseAbstract
The authors present the case of a 45-year-old woman, who
was referred to the Internal Medicine Outpatient Department for
study of elevation on the hepatic enzymes (alkaline phosphatase,
gamma-glutamyltranspherase and aminotransferases) found
on a routine laboratory evaluation. She was previously healthy,
asymptomatic and presented no alterations on her clinical examination. Further evaluation revealed negative anti-mytocondrial
and anti-nuclear autoantibodies, and positive anti-smooth muscle
autoantibodies. The liver biopsy revealed bile duct lesion, supporting the diagnosis of autoimmune cholangitis. In this article we
review this still controversial clinical entity.
