Abstract

During a two year period the authors detected haemorrhagic complications of low weight
molecular heparin´s(LWMH) in five patients: 3 females and 2 males with an average age greater than 75.
LMWH was used in deep vein thrombosis/ pulmonary thromboembolism (DVT/PTE) suspicion (2), unstable angina (1) and DVT/PTE
prevention (2). Adverse effects were spontaneous retroperitoneal bleeding with hypovolaemic shock (1), haemorrhagic suffusion with intramuscular haematoma (1), extensive per umbilical haematoma (1) and haemorrhagic
suffusions (2). As reported, additional risk factors for bleeding are: old age, chronic renal
insuficiency, chronic hepatic disease, use of salicylates and systemic corticotherapy.
The authors concluded that patients undergoing continuous LMWH therapy should be criteriously identified and monitorized to prevent complications
