Quinolones and bacterial resistance
Keywords:
quinolones, resistent bacterial strainsAbstract
The fluoroquinolones are antimicrobial agents introduced in the clinical use at the beggining of the eighties. Their broad spectrum against bacterial species, like Pseudomonas aeruginosa and methicillin resistent strains of Staphilococus aureus, orally absorbed and a favorable side effect profile, have rapidly made them an widely prescribed antibiotics. But in 1989-90 some information repported the devellopment of resistent bacterial strains. The authors, based on the lite rature and their hospital data, warn against the empirical use of quinolones and their negative implications on the infection control.
