Labial salivary gland biopsy in Sjögren’s syndrome: results and their implications in a population of 78 patients
Keywords:
Sjögren’s syndrome, classification criteria, labial salivary gland biopsy, Chisholm-Manson classification, European Study GroupAbstract
Objective: To determine:
1) the results of labial salivary gland biopsies (LSGB)
2) the implications of the results with respect to the classification criteria of Sjögren’s syndrome (SS)
3) Assess the sensitivity of LSGB in SS in patients from our Unit with the clinical diagnosis of SS.
Methods: The clinical charts from all the patients with the diagnosis of SS were reviewed using the
European Study Group’s classification criteria.
Results and conclusions: 78 patients had a clinical diagnosis of SS. A LSGB was performed in 56 (71.8%)
patients. According to the Chisholm-Manson classification, the results were: stage 0 (4%), stage 1
(11%), stage 2 (29%), stage 3 (31%) and stage 4 (25%). The LSGB was essential for correct
classification in 44.6% of patients. Its sensitivity was 82.1%, when a stage 3 or 4 was considered.
