Clearence of C virus after acute hepatitis B
Keywords:
hepatitis B, hepatitis C, immune responseAbstract
Introduction: The replication of Hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) virus
and the immune response involved in the mechanism of hepatic
lesion in viral hepatitis remains unknown.
Case report: The authors present a 34 year-old male patient,
an intravenous drug addict in abstinence for 5 years, with Hepatitis C diagnosed for a year, genotype 3a. In December 2004 he
had acute hepatitis B with stage 4 encephalopathy and a severe
coagulation disorder. He started Lamivudine 100mg per day and
was proposed for hepatic transplant, but there was a significant
neurological, clinical and analytic improvement. One month after
acute hepatitis, serologic tests showed cured hepatitis B and
the quantitative RNA HCV test was not detectable for the next nine months.
Discussion and Conclusion: Supportive treatment is the classical management of acute Hepatitis B. However, there are some
studies concerning the use of some antiviral agents, to improve
the cure rate and prognosis. There are a few published cases
of clearance of HCV after acute Hepatitis B. The authors carried
out a literature search of the pathophysiology and interactions
of HBV, HCV, immunologic system and the effect of Lamivudin in this situation.
