Abstract

Bladder catheterisation occurs frequently, often in an exaggerated fashion and with imprecise indications. The author presents the more relevant clinicai situations, the current correct technique, and management indications of this intervention.

Complications occur very frequently, varying from immediate complications related to the catheterisation technique, to !ater complications, usually after chronic use. These can be reduced by certain preventive measures. Finally, the author presents suprapubic percutaneous cystostomy as an alternative.
